Abstract
Mucins are the major macromolecular components in mucus secretion. They are highly glycosylated and responsible for visco-elasticity of the mucus. Several mucin genes have been identified (MUC1¡4, MUC5AC, MUC5B, and MUC6-9, MUC11¡13). Mucin genes have been known to show several important biological role in airway and gastroentero organs. However at the present time, little information is available for the expression pattern of mucin genes in embryonic fetus of rat. Among them we localized expressed pattern of MUCSAC which is one of rich mucins in 15th and 18th pregnant day rat fetus. Immunohsitochemistry was used to study the protein expression of MUC5AC in 21 rat fetuses. MUC5AC were differently expressed in fetal tissues. These differences in mucin gene expression may suggest a possible regulatory role for these products in development and differentiation of epithelial cells.
